Why and How to make backup for small website?

As a service provider ( www.netspaceindia.com ) we came across several quires from our customers around the globe one of  the most asked query is ” how to make a backup of our website ? ” For shared customer we always recommend customer to take backup of your data at your local end.
So here we are explaining the requirement and steps for making a backup.

Why :
As number of website are growing day by day the data inside their database is also growing rapidly. As your website grows it is important to start backing-up your data so in case of any disaster / attack  (Like : Gumblar Attacks) you can easily and safely restore your website.

How :
If you are a customer of www.netspaceindia.com  and taken a shared hosting from us like Linux or windows hosting then you will should be having either Plesk (Windows ) or Cpanel (Linux) control panel, bellow are steps for backing-up your website :

Cpanel (Linux Shared Hosting)  :

  1. Login to Cpanel from www.yourdomain.com/cpane
  2. Look For Backup option under Files Tab
  3. Under Full Backup click on “Download or Generate a full website backup”
  4. select backup destination (Select Home) and provide it with your email address.
  5. once the backup is completed you will get mail from your server.
  6. After the mail login into your Cpanel and follow step 1 to 3.
  7. Now you will see your backup file in the list.
  8. Click on the file name and download it.

Note : Cpanel backup file will have extension of .tar.gz which you can use to restore it latter or you can simply unzip it in your local PC.

Plesk (Windows Shared Hosting) :

  1. Login to your plesk panel from https://yourdomain.com:8443/
  2. Look for “Backup Manager” under file tab
  3. under backup manager click on backup
  4. give backup file any name
  5. UN-check “Create multivolume backup”
  6. under Store backup in select “Server repository”
  7. under Backup content select Domain configuration and content “All Configuration and Content”
  8. then submit backup button.
  9. After a while your backup will be completed and will show you under backup option in plesk
  10. You can download the backup file from there.

Please note that it is important that keep on downloading your backup from time to time.
